Study Group Tomiki Aikido
We started the studygroup some years ago just by coincidence. Someone was looking for a partner to do a 6th dan grading JAA. After a while, the interest for the grading ebbed away because the content of the syllabus for grading was in some way conflicting with teachings of Senta Yamada and other early instructors in Europe.
The plan was made to come together on a regular base to study the “original” teaching of Senta Yamada. We discovered a much larger version of Senta Yamada’s movie. We also have a movie and some direct experience with Teruo Fujiwara (an old student of Tomiki). And some of us practised a lot with dr Lee ah Loi, Takeshi Inoue, Itsuo Haba, ....
We also have a good relationship with Fumiaka Shishida, Tadayuki Satoh, Yoshiomi Inoue,.... To share all this knowdledge is the purpose of the Studygroup.
The objectives of the Studygroup is to study “Judo Taiso”, or the exercises to introduce “aiki” to judo students.
Basically we study the relationship between :
Unsoku - Tandoku undo - Sotai dosa / Basic kata, koryu no kata (6) and randori
Kihon no kamae : lining up the body, arm inside
Uchi mawashi : vertical circle on the inside, lining up and opening the body, creating space to do a vertical circle
Soto mawashi : vertical circle on the outside
Uchi gaeshi / soto gaeshi : this is turning inside and outside of the elbow without moving the elbow outside or inside
Uchi mawashi tentai : using the spiral line, body is making a turn of 180°
Soto mawashi tentai : using a vertical circle with a body turn of 180°
Ko mawashi : body turn of 180° with uchi gaeshi and soto gaeshi
O mawashi : making a big circle with body turning
Ai gamae ude hineri (ura dori) - using sotogaeshi
Gyaku gamae ude hineri (omote dori) - using uchigaeshi
Ai gamae ude gaeshi (omote dori) - using uchi mawashi
Gyaku gamae ude gaeshi (ura dori) - using soto mawashi
Ai gamae tenkai ude hineri (omote dori) - using soto mawashi

Besides the exercises developped by Tomiki and his direct students, we try to incorporate
concepts from other “internal” martial arts.
Especially “ body frame - alignment - groundpath - stretching ......”
